Marcella Hazan's tomato sauce

1 medium yellow onion peeled and halved,
1 1/2 tsp salt,
1/4 tsp. granulated sugar.

Instructions
1. wash the tomatoes in cold water. Cut them in half, lengthwise. Cook
in a covered pan simmering for 10 min.
2. Puree tomatoes using food mill. Put tomatoes back in pot and add
onion, salt and sugar and cook slowly simmering and stirring from time
to time uncovered for about 45 min. Remove onion. Enjoy.
