Traditional baked beans slow-cooked for 6-9 hours with molasses and mustard. Worth the wait!
Ingredients
3 cups dried white (navy or great northern) beans
1 large onion, peeled and diced small
1/3 cup blackstrap molasses
2 tablespoons barley malt syrup
2 tablespoons stone-ground mustard
1 teaspoon dry powdered mustard (optional)
1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
28 oz can diced tomatoes
Instructions
1. Soak beans overnight in 9 cups water, refrigerated.
2. Drain and bring to boil in 9 cups fresh water.
3. Reduce heat, cover, and cook until nearly tender, about 45 minutes.
4. Drain beans, reserving 2 cups liquid.
5. Combine beans with all other ingredients in 4-quart covered casserole.
6. Cover and bake at 250°F for 6-9 hours.
7. Check occasionally and add bean liquid if needed.
8. Leave uncovered for last hour.
Alternate: Cook up to 12 hours in crockpot on low.
