Old Fashioned Baked Beans

Classic slow-baked beans with molasses, mustard, and caramelized onions.

Ingredients

1 lb great northern or small white beans 1 teaspoon dry mustard 1/2 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper Dash of hot sauce 1/2 cup chopped onion 1/4 cup molasses or honey 1/4 cup brown sugar 1/4 cup cider vinegar

Instructions

1. Presoak beans overnight. Drain. 2. Combine dry ingredients and mix with beans. 3. Stir in remaining ingredients. 4. Pour into 1 1/2 to 2 quart baking dish. 5. Add boiling water to cover. 6. Cover and bake at 300°F for 6 hours. 7. Add a bit of boiling water if needed during cooking. Crock-pot method: Cook on low 8-10 hours. Note: Add vinegar at end of cooking to prevent tough beans.
