Four-loaf recipe for basic homemade bread. The secret is in the kneading - work that dough!
Ingredients
2 tablespoons yeast
1 cup warm water
1 teaspoon sugar
1/4 cup sugar
2 tablespoons salt (may decrease to 1 teaspoon)
6-7 cups bread flour
3 cups warm water
Instructions
1. Mix yeast, 1 cup warm water, and 1 teaspoon sugar. Let stand until foamy, 3-5 minutes.
2. Add 3 cups warm water, 1/4 cup sugar, and start adding flour.
3. When very thick, add salt. Continue adding flour until can't add more.
4. Turn out and let rest while cleaning bowl.
5. Knead for 10 minutes adding remaining flour.
6. Place in oiled or sprayed bowl, turn to coat. Cover and let rise until doubled.
7. Punch down, divide into 4 equal parts.
8. Place in oiled pans, let rise until even with pan top.
9. Bake at 350°F for 25-30 minutes.
Note: This bread is much more substantial than store-bought and tastes wonderful!
